The ROE

Imagine a place where you can pull up the duvet, throw open the doors and look straight at one of the Lake District’s iconic mountains. A place where peace and tranquility meet, where you can refresh your soul.

Imagine a place where you can pull up the duvet, throw open the doors and look straight at one of the Lake District’s iconic mountains.

A place where peace and tranquility meet, where you can refresh your soul.

If you have found the Roe, you have found a little bit of heaven on earth.

This bespoke cabin has been lovingly designed by its owners and every detail has been carefully thought through.

Everything you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of your life is here. There’s just songbirds for company and our resident Belted Galloway cows.

There is literally nothing between the foot of the kingsize bed and the most incredible view.

Tucked behind the headboard is a mini kitchen, fully equipped for you to brew a pot of coffee or prepare a healthy meal. When you arrive, you’ll find a bottle of fizz chilling in the fridge and some home-made biscuits to enjoy. We’re within walking distance of the village if you want to go to one of the two local pubs.

In the shower room, there will be no chilly toes, as the whole cabin enjoys underfloor heating.

Outside you can sit back and watch the stars – In The Vale enjoys some of the darkest skies in the UK – if you’re lucky you’ll catch a shooting star or a hint of the northern lights.

There’s a fire-pit to keep you warm as the sun goes down – which doubles as a griddle if you fancy cooking on it!.

And once night falls, the wildlife comes out to play. You’ll hear our resident owls and sometimes catch sight of the deer as they move silently across our farm.

Or you can hop in to the wood fired hot tub, on your own private patio, and while away your time, letting the heat soak away your worries. Our team has thought of everything, so you don’t have to… lovely local bathroom products are provided, fluffy white towels, plush white robes and of course immaculate Egyptian cotton bedding.

We’ve deliberately not turned the wifi on… if you ache for the kind of break we offer, there’s no need for screens! (But if you are desperate for a daily dose of social media – we can pick up a good signal from the mast in Threlkeld).

In The Vale is about four miles from the town of Keswick – here you’ll find a lively market town beside the lake. Here there are lots of places to eat out and an excellent theatre which has shows on all year round.

We can’t wait to welcome you.

IN THE VALE, BIRKETT MIRE, THRLKELD, KESWICK, CA12 4TT

BY CAR
Following directions for CA12 4TT from the A66, approx 1 mile from your destination you will turn off the A66 heading onto station Rd/B5322, signposted St johns in the vale and Threlkeld Mining Museum. Once on this road you should look for the first farm on your right (Birkett Mire sign at the top of the lonning).

If arriving from the south via the lakes, follow directions for CA124TT or Threlkeld. There are a couple of addresses that share this postcode so when in a 1 mile radius look for a farm on your left hand side (Birkett Mire). If you get to the junction for Threlkeld Quarry and mining museum you’ve gone roughly 50m too far.

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT
The nearest train station is 15 miles away at Penrith and the local bus stop is 1.2 miles away in the village of Threlkeld.

AT BIRKETT MIRE
Located in the heart of the Lake District, In The Vale is in a prime location for access to many outdoor activities.

Walking around the farm grounds and the local peaks can entertain you from 1 hour to a full day. With two rivers close you can experience wild swimming from your doorstep.

Birkett Mire is a fully working farm so guests can expect to see the full works from lambing time in spring to tupping season in autumn; there will almost always be some sort of livestock in the near vicinity of The Stag, The Fawn, and The Fallow.

During the summer months, you can pick your own potatoes from the potato patch.

KESWICK MARKET
The place to find local products and local crafts.

Lingholm kitchen and walled garden
Home to fantastic breakfast and brunch, you can also find Quad treks and Alpaca walking here.

Plenty of walks such as Striding Edge (Helvellyn), Sharp Edge (Blencathra), Skiddaw, Scarfell Pike, Catbells, Force Crag mines, Derwent Water, Buttermere, and Ullswater.

Whinlatter Forest
Assortment of Mountain Biking Trails, walking trails and cafe with an osprey zone.

Honister Slate Mine
Located at the very top of the Borrowdale valley hosting a wide range of outdoor activities from Mine Tours to the Via Ferrata and infinity bridge.

LAKES DISTILLERY
Just a 20-minute drive from our lovely stays you can immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of a working distillery. Tours and tasting are available all year round.

The Horse and Farrier
Located in the village of Threlkeld, only a 10-minute walk from Birkett Mire, The Horse and Farrier offers a wide range of Lakeland ales and spirits from the Lakes Distillery and serves a wide variety of great food.

KESWICK

The Jumble Room
Grasmere is a must and the owners really do recommend making time to visit. The small cosy restaurant is cow-themed and is family-owned. The only downside is you will have to jump in a car for 15 mins.

The Yan
The Yan Bistro, also situated in Grasmere, serves delicious rustic Cumbrian dishes, nostalgic British classics, and exciting modern flavours all inspired by the farm’s history. Everything is made from fantastic quality local Cumbrian ingredients. A great place to end a day after walking on the fells.
