Barley Barn

Barley Barn is one of our luxury Lake District hideaways sitting in the valley surrounded by mountains - Blencathra to the north and Helvellyn to the south.

It has long been our dream to convert our grade two listed barn into luxury holiday cottages with dramatic views down the valley from which we take our name – In The Vale.

And we are so happy to invite you to stay…

Barley Barn

The rising sun pours light into Barley Barn – a spotless, modern conversion of a space rooted in the history of our farm.

In years gone by, the barn would have stored the barley crop, you’ll get a hint of where we got the name when you spot the huge threshing wheel hanging high in the eaves.

Barley Barn is one of our luxury Lake District hideaways sitting in the valley surrounded by mountains – Blencathra to the north and Helvellyn to the south.

Once inside you can admire the original slate entrance and the wooden beams overhead, but we have left the past behind when it came to creating these spaces.

A seamlessly styled kitchen with everything you require including a Quooker hot water tap and Siemens appliances. The Stunning table was handmade by brothers Jack and Luke who grew up on the farm. They’re made from an old oak tree that fell in a storm. We wanted to keep a piece of its 183 year life forever alive in our cottages, see if you can count all the rings!

There’s a cosy seating area with underfloor heating where you can see for miles and a sheepskin to snuggle against. If you can tear yourself away from the view, there’s a television and a log burner too. And don’t worry – we’ll lay the first fire for you, ready for when you arrive.

Up the floating glass staircase, on the mezzanine level, you’ll find your king size bed with crisp white linen that smells like springtime and super plush pillows to sink your head into.

The spacious pristine marble wetroom with a waterfall shower and toiletries brings notes of grapefruit and lemongrass or geranium and ylang-ylang.

Outside on the patio, a stream burbles in the background and our sheep will be chatting to each other across the fields. If you’re with us in springtime, you’ll see our lambs taking their first steps. You can sit and chill out or settle into the cedar wood hot tub and stare at the stars.

Our cedar wood hot tub is divine. Once you have tried a real wood hot tub, there’s no going back. The first thing that you’ll notice is the smell… cedar wood has a sweet woody fragrance… it’s less minty than pine and less musky than patchouli. It’s warm, comforting and relaxing. You’ll notice you are gently glowing golden in its soothing waters, which studies show reduces stiffness in joints and eases tired muscles. Sitting shoulder-deep in the tub, you have clear views along the ridge of High Rigg and down St John’s In The Vale.

IN THE VALE, BIRKETT MIRE, THRLKELD, KESWICK, CA12 4TT

BY CAR
Following directions for CA12 4TT from the A66, approx 1 mile from your destination you will turn off the A66 heading onto station Rd/B5322, signposted St johns in the vale and Threlkeld Mining Museum. Once on this road you should look for the first farm on your right (Birkett Mire sign at the top of the lonning).

If arriving from the south via the lakes, follow directions for CA124TT or Threlkeld. There are a couple of addresses that share this postcode so when in a 1 mile radius look for a farm on your left hand side (Birkett Mire). If you get to the junction for Threlkeld Quarry and mining museum you’ve gone roughly 50m too far.
