The RED

I dreamt about a place where you would pen the first line of your book, or write the start of your song, or find the answer to the question you have been searching for. The Red is our creative cabin, it’s a mindful place and an escape from your busy life to find your brilliant self.

I dreamt about a place where you would pen the first line of your book, or write the start of your song, or find the answer to the question you have been searching for.

The Red is our creative cabin, it’s a mindful place and an escape from your busy life to find your brilliant self.

This is where the wise come to stay and play – a hidden gem of a cabin in the Lake District – in the vale that we call home.

We want you to be inspired, to feel your soul sigh as the weight of your worries lift and your creative genius takes off.

I’ve found two lovely chairs for you to sink into as you chew the top of your pen and gaze at the marvellous mountain we call Saddleback.

Or you can make yourself a brew, curl up on the kingsize bed with a good book and be whisked away to another world entirely.

In the shower room, there will be no chilly toes, as the whole cabin enjoys underfloor heating. And we provide toiletries made right here in the Lake District.

We’ve kitted out your mini kitchen so that you don’t need to leave – there’ll be a bottle of fizz in the fridge and some homemade biscuits too. Though there are pubs in the nearby village if you want to eat out.

Outside, on your own private patio, there’s a fire-pit to keep you warm – which doubles as a griddle if you fancy cooking on it!.

When the sun goes down, it’s the perfect time to warm the wood-fired hot tub and settle down for a night of star-gazing. In The Vale enjoys some of the darkest skies in the UK – if you’re lucky you’ll catch a shooting star or a hint of the northern lights.

And once night falls, the wildlife comes out to play. You’ll hear our resident owls and sometimes catch sight of the deer as they move silently across our farm.

Our team has thought of everything, so you don’t have to… lovely local bathroom products are provided, fluffy white towels, plush white robes and of course immaculate Egyptian cotton bedding.

We’ve deliberately not turned the wifi on… if you ache for the kind of break we offer, there’s no need for screens! (But if you are desperate for a daily dose of social media – we can pick up a good signal from the mast in Threlkeld).

At the bottom of our field there is a river you can swim in and an old railway line passes through too – so there’s a safe cycleway to and from Keswick.

In The Vale is about four miles from the town of Keswick – here you’ll find a lively market town beside the lake. Here there are lots of places to eat out and an excellent theatre which has shows on all year round.

We can’t wait to welcome you.

IN THE VALE, BIRKETT MIRE, THRLKELD, KESWICK, CA12 4TT

BY CAR
Following directions for CA12 4TT from the A66, approx 1 mile from your destination you will turn off the A66 heading onto station Rd/B5322, signposted St johns in the vale and Threlkeld Mining Museum. Once on this road you should look for the first farm on your right (Birkett Mire sign at the top of the lonning).

If arriving from the south via the lakes, follow directions for CA124TT or Threlkeld. There are a couple of addresses that share this postcode so when in a 1 mile radius look for a farm on your left hand side (Birkett Mire). If you get to the junction for Threlkeld Quarry and mining museum you’ve gone roughly 50m too far.

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT
The nearest train station is 15 miles away at Penrith and the local bus stop is 1.2 miles away in the village of Threlkeld.

AT BIRKETT MIRE
Located in the heart of the Lake District, In The Vale is in a prime location for access to many outdoor activities.

Walking around the farm grounds and the local peaks can entertain you from 1 hour to a full day. With two rivers close you can experience wild swimming from your doorstep.

Birkett Mire is a fully working farm so guests can expect to see the full works from lambing time in spring to tupping season in autumn; there will almost always be some sort of livestock in the near vicinity of The Stag, The Fawn, and The Fallow.

During the summer months, you can pick your own potatoes from the potato patch.

The Yan
The Yan Bistro, also situated in Grasmere, serves delicious rustic Cumbrian dishes, nostalgic British classics, and exciting modern flavours all inspired by the farm’s history. Everything is made from fantastic quality local Cumbrian ingredients. A great place to end a day after walking on the fells.
