The Stag

A cosy, private space

The STAG named itself when it was pulled out of the lambing shed into our field overlooked by Blencathra. Standing very proud in a quiet corner of St Johns In The Vale it’s our most private place to be. It’s a cosy space, entirely unique and complemented with a bespoke tub in the heart of the Lake District, surrounded by peaks, trails, and local ales. This was the first bespoke cabin to be built at Birkett Mire by eldest son Luke.

Douglas fir trees are harvested at the top of the Vale before being sawn into our cladding at Bram Crag Sawmill. The wetroom sink’s pedestal came out of a larch tree that was felled in a winter storm.

The Stag features a quirky king-sized bed that is more than out of the ordinary. It also has a mini fitted kitchen and a bespoke breakfast bar with amazing views of Blencathra.

Outside, in your own private space, there’s a fire-pit to keep you warm – which doubles as a griddle if you fancy cooking on it! When the sun goes down, it’s the perfect time to warm the bespoke wood-fired hot tub and settle down for a night of star-gazing.

Such a hidden gem! Lots of info prior to arrival, Greeted on arrival and given a run down of the facilities and local places that we could visit! Prosecco and fresh bakes waiting for us at the hut, So much attention to detail. The Stag had everything we could ask for and the location just topped it off!
STUNNING, stayed in the stag & this is by far the nicest place we’ve ever stayed. Beautiful views, the stag was more private which we loved. The selling point for me was seeing the animals on our doorstep amazing! The hot tub & fires were amazing and all part of the experience lighting them ourselves, there was so many appliances in the cabin but the attention to detail was second to none… the fresh bottle of milk in the fridge, the tea, coffee, cookies, Prosecco everything! I felt like all those little things were super thoughtful, All down to the deck of cards… honestly the perfect getaway. Only a 10 minute drive from Keswick town. The lady who greeted us upon arrival was so friendly & welcoming… as dog lovers we absolutely loved meeting a few of the dogs on the land which were the most polite well behaved dogs I’ve ever met!! We will 10000% be back!
We stayed in “The stag” for our honeymoon, our stay has been absolutely perfect ❤️ The stag has recently been moved and grounds are beautiful as is the view . The accommodation itself is stunning , it’s everything and more for a romantic, relaxing getaway. Would highly recommend. What a lovely way to end our wedding celebrations 🥰
Absolutely amazing place to stay! Beautiful views, lovely facilities, close to loads of pubs and farm shop. The hot tub stays warm for hours! We stayed in the Stag which has lots more privacy and has a kitchen area. Will be coming again!
